Why Clean Fragrance Oils Matter for Your Wellbeing

Have you ever lit a beautiful scented candle only to find yourself reaching for the paracetamol an hour later? If you have struggled with headaches, irritated airways, or general discomfort around fragranced products, you’ve likely experienced the not-so-sweet side of conventional candle ingredients.

At Imoscent, we believe home fragrance should be a source of calm and joy, not a health hazard. That’s why we take great care in selecting our wax (pure rapeseed and coconut – made in Europe, of course!) and, critically, our fragrance oils.
We are proud to use only high quality fragrance oils. But why does this matter? Let’s uncover the hidden ingredients that could be impacting your health.

1. The Dangers of Phthalates (The "Enduring" Scent)
Phthalates (pronounced thāl-ātes) are a group of chemical compounds often used in the fragrance industry. Why? They act as a solvent and a scent fixative, meaning they help the fragrance linger for a long time.
Unfortunately, this chemical "longevity" comes at a cost to your body:
 * The Headaches Trigger: Phthalates are a common culprit for triggering migraines and headaches in sensitive individuals. This is the exact reason Imoscent came to be, as I was not keen on Imogen bringing home scented candles of unknown quality!
 * Endocrine Disruption: Phthalates are classified as Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs). They can mimic hormones (like oestrogen), potentially interfering with your body’s natural hormonal balance.
 * Respiratory Concerns: Exposure to phthalates can be linked to respiratory irritation, making them a concern for those with asthma or chemical sensitivities.

2. The Problem with Parabens (The Hidden Preservative)
Parabens are a group of artificial preservatives used in many cosmetic and personal care products, often to prevent the growth of bacteria, mould, and yeast. They can also appear in lower-quality fragrance oils.
Similar to phthalates, parabens come with significant health concerns:
 * Hormone Mimics: Like phthalates, parabens can also act as endocrine disruptors by mimicking the action of oestrogen in the body.
 * Skin and Immune Reactions: Parabens are known to cause skin irritation and allergic reactions, especially for those with conditions like eczema or dermatitis.

3. The Truth About Essential Oils in Candles and Melts
"Why don't you just use pure essential oils?" It's a question you might be thinking, and while essential oils are natural, they often pose significant safety and efficacy issues when used in burning or melting products:

Safety & Fire Risk - Many essential oils have a low flash point, meaning they can become flammable at relatively low temperatures. Adding them to a wax melt or candle can create a fire hazard, leading to flare-ups or unstable burning.

Chemical Breakdown - The high heat produced by a wax melt burner or candle flame can cause delicate essential oils to chemically degrade. This breakdown can release unknown compounds into the air that are often more irritating or harmful than the original oil.

Poor Scent Throw - Essential oils are highly volatile. When heated, they evaporate very quickly, meaning the lovely scent you start with quickly fades, leaving you with a very weak fragrance.

Toxicity Risk - "Natural" does not automatically mean safe. Certain pure essential oils (like Cinnamon or Eucalyptus) are simply too potent to be safely inhaled over long periods when used in high concentrations.

Our fragrance oils are specially formulated and rigorously tested to be safe for heating in wax. They comply with stringent UK and EU safety standards and provide the best of both worlds: a strong, consistent aroma without the chemical or flammability risks associated with burning pure essential oils or using cheap, potentially toxin-filled alternatives.

It’s time to enjoy home fragrance without the compromise. Shop our beautifully scented candles and wax melts today and experience the difference!
